Best Luxury Hotel

Having to pick only one hotel from this list is an hard task, but probably I’d go with Petra Marriott Hotel because of the views it has on the surrounding mountains.

Best Mid-Range Hotel

More in the high-mid-range Petra Guest House is unbeatable for its position a few meters outside Petra entrance. Need another winning point? Its cave bar! I mean, when will you have another chance to drink a cocktail inside a 2000 old cave?!

The most beautiful hotels in Petra, Wadi Musa

One of the most important things to consider when booking a night in Wadi Musa, is its proximity to the visitors center. Believe me when I say that after spending a whole day walking, the distance from the tourist center to your hotel will be very VERY important!

Following this logic, the comparative table and hotels list are sorted by the hotel’s closeness to the entrance of Petra, I even added a column with the exact distance.

Good to know: All the hotels mentioned can pack lunch boxes that you can bring inside Petra, that’s a good alternative to the very expensive official kiosks inside.

The Best Hotels in Petra (closest hotel to Petra Entrance first)

Petra Guest House

Petra Guest House is strategically built literally a few meters to the visitors center. It’s the closest you can be to the Rose City. The rooms are clean and they have an abundant breakfast buffet.

The hotel has probably the oldest bar location in the world! In fact their cave bar is situated inside a 2000 years old Nabatean carved cave. Hotel’s guests have a discount at the restaurant, which can be an excellent experience even if you are an external visitor.

If you have mobility issues, the hotel maybe isn’t ideal for you as it has no elevators and some rooms have many stairs to climb. Don’t worry about luggage though, personnel is there to help you.

Check out prices/book your stay at Petra Guest House.

Wondering how dining inside a 2000 years old Nabatean cave would look like? ⬇️

Mövenpick Resort Petra

Mövenpick is a guarantee of quality and luxury all around the world and they make no exception in Petra. Their luxurious hotel is just a few meters outside Petra gates making it a great deal for the early birds.

As a luxury hotel, Mövenpick sets the bar high with its Middle Eastern delightful decor and interiors, its delicious food, and high quality services.

Check out prices/book your stay at Mövenpick Resort Petra.

Edom Hotel

A budget friendly choice providing a very good service. Edom Hotel is one of the best compromises between quality and price you will find in Wadi Rum. Rooms are simple, but clean and spacious, and the breakfast buffet is very abundant and good.

The hotel is also still very close to Petra entrance on Tourist Street, the area is full of typical Jordanian restaurants (Jordan cuisine is excellent!) and souvenirs shops.

Check out prices/book your stay at Edom Hotel.

Petra Moon Luxury Hotel

Another great solution to luxuriously rest after a tiring day is Petra Moon Luxury Hotel. The rooms are very beautiful and large, they have an excellent continental buffet for every tastes. The rooftop pool is ideal also to relax after the long hours under Petra’s sun.

Don’t let the booking.com map fool you! The hotel is NOT situated just outside the entrance, you will have to get out from the tourist center and have a short 3-4 minutes walk. The hotel’s position is still one of the best in Wadi Musa.

Check out prices/book your stay at Petra Moon Luxury Hotel.

H Luxury Hotel

The H Luxury Hotel is a brand new luxury hotel in Petra. The hotel is top notch quality but still unfinished, like the spa services aren’t available yet. But there are no doubts that this will be one of the best hotels in Petra once it’s over!

Many guests who have already stayed there, loved the hotel to the point that H Luxury Hotel is one of the highest rated hotels in Petra! The only downside of staying there is the gentle slope you will have to climb after your exploration in Petra, but the jacuzzi and pool will cheer you up.

Check out prices/book your stay at H Luxury Hotel.

One of Petra’s lovely inhabitants.

Town Season Hotel

Situated in the city center of Wadi Musa, the Town Season Hotel is a bit far from the entrance of Petra. If you don’t have a car or are not willing to cross the 1,4 kilometers on foot, the hotel as a shuttle which is available for an extra fee.

What makes the Town Season Hotel one of the best in Petra is its great compromise between quality and price. You will think you’ve stepped in a luxurious hotel when you actually payed half the price than if you stayed in a 5 stars hotel. Of course the hotel don’t have a pool or spa, but for the price that’s normal and completely forgivable.

Check out prices/book your stay at Town Season Hotel.

The Old Village Hotel & Resort

The Old Village Hotel & Resort is a secluded property very close to the King’s Highway and Wadi Musa Northern part. The resort has an excellent position for a panoramic view of Wadi Musa, although that means it’s quite far from Petra entrance. To bring its guests to the Rose City, the hotel has a free shuttle to Petra visitor’s center.

The outdoor pool, which is adults only, and the relaxing area are perfect for relaxing (be careful to the sun!) as an alternative to exploring Petra all day long. For families, the hotel has an indoor pool with a bar. The rooms are also beautifully decorated giving the hotel an extra luxurious touch.

Check out prices/book your stay at The Old Village Hotel & Resort.

The view of Wadi Musa and The Old Village Hotel and Resort (you can see the pool).

Petra Marriott Hotel

Generally I’d recommend Hotels that are close to the entrance, so why am I recommending Petra Marriott Hotel? The reason is very simple: the view! The mountains that delimit the border between Aqaba and Ma’an regions create a surreal landscape which is typical in Southern Jordan (especially in Wadi Rum area).

Marriott has an amazing view on the surrounding area and is on the King’s Highway which is practical to continue your journey to the South.

As a 5 star hotel Petra Marriott Hotel has beautiful large rooms and an impeccable customer service. The pool area is perfect for relaxing and the opening time are also ideal as it closes at 8 PM allowing you to rest after a FULL day of exploration in Petra.

Check out prices/book your stay at Petra Marriott Hotel.

Petra Bubble Luxotel (perfect for couples 💑)

Nearby Little Petra, North from the ancient Nabatean city, Petra Bubble Luxotel is a bubbles camp! Just like Marriott, Luxotel benefits from an excellent view on the surrounding mountains even if Luxotel is North from Petra and Wadi Musa.

The bubbles are spacious and very private and they all come with a jacuzzi which makes this accommodation ideal for couples who are planning a romantic escape. The hotel is far from Petra entrance but they have a free shuttle which will lead you to the entrance. The system which keep the bubbles up may be a bit noisy. If you can bring you earplugs for a perfect beauty sleep.

Did you know? Bubbles are one of the coolest accommodations in Wadi Rum! If you are traveling there check out our selection of the best bubbles in Wadi Rum.

Things to consider when deciding where to stay in Petra

The hotel must be near Petra entrance (visitor center), or have a shuttle. This is very important as I already mentioned as at the end of the day you will be pretty tired of all the walking, climbing, and cooking under the sun. Any extra meter to your hotel room will look endless, unless of course you are taking a taxi.

Many hotels that are far from the visitor’s center provide a shuttle (most often free). Although you will be linked to their schedule.

Do you really need a pool or spa center? Even though I love traveling in style and comfort I feel like in Petra some extra luxuries like a spa or pool won’t be necessary. And most pools and spa centers close around 6 PM. Unless you sacrifice some precious time from your wandering you won’t be able to enjoy those services.

I’d prefer investing in a good spa treatment on the shores of the Red Sea in Aqaba, or indulge in some curative baths on the Dead Sea.

So where will you stay in Petra?

I hope this article helped you clear your mind about the accommodations Wadi Musa offers. Once you have established your budget it should be very easy to pick the right choice for you! If you are planning a trip to Jordan check out our travel guides for more helpful advices.

9 Amazing things to do in Pamukkale, the Cotton Castle

Pamukkale is one of the most unique destinations in Turkey. Its evocative name, which translates from Turkish as “Cotton Castle”, says it all! The rock formation of travertine forms natural pools that look like clouds. The area also benefits of thermal springs that are known since antiquity. But there are so many more incredible things to do in Pamukkale, without further ado let’s see them!

Disclosure: anitabeyondthesea.com is reader-supported. When you make a reservation through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission, at no extra cost for you. That will help me keep the blog up and running. Thank you!

Table of Content

1. Walk on the Cotton Castle

Take off your shoes and walk barefoot on the surreal terraces of Pamukkale. The mineral-rich thermal waters flowing down the terraces create a unique landscape.

The travertine terraces of Pamukkale were formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate deposits left behind by the flowing thermal waters. The water, heated by geothermal activity deep underground, emerges from the ground and cascades down the terraces, leaving behind a series of shimmering white pools.

Unfortunately following the development of the area the water that once ran through the travertine terraces was diverged. The place is still incredible, but now you will notice that water runs only in the large pools next to the walking path. While once you are on the top, the travertine terraces are empty except after heavy rains.

During the hot Turkish summer if there hasn’t been any rain the pools on top of the hill dry. Although along the path to the top there is always water in the pools. See the picture below.

things to do in pamukkale travertine terraces

Tips for visiting

Make sure to plan ahead and bring a backpack to carry essential items like a small towel, shoes, and socks. Inside the site you can’t wear shoes and you will want to enjoy the thermal waters along the way.

Remember also that the bright white surface reflects sunlight intensely, if you have fair skin consider covering up and applying sunscreen for protection. Certain areas can also be slippery or irregular.

2. Explore Hierapolis

Pamukkale is world-known because of the travertine pools, but the ancient city of Hierapolis is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Turkey. Anciently a Phrygian community, it was under the Greek dominance that it became a bustling spa city.

Nowadays Hierapolis preserves many of the ancient buildings and roads, including the Theatre. Exploring the alleys and ruins is a great experience, if you have the chance to book a guided tour I highly recommend it to learn more about the site’s history.

Explore the Archaeological Museum located inside one of the largest buildings in Hierapolis, the Roman baths. The collection isn’t very large but it’s very interesting, featuring a rich collection of artifacts from the ancient city. And also from the neighboring archaeological sites of Colossae, Laodiceia, Tripolis, Attuda, Beycesultan, and Çatalhöyük.

The entry is not included in the access to Hierapolis, but for the small fee it’s absolutely worth it!

3. Bathe in Cleopatra’s Pool

Before leaving Hierapolis you can enjoy a rejuvenating swim in Cleopatra’s Pool. Situated in the middle of the ruins, this pool is filled with warm thermal waters and submerged by ancient columns, offering a remarkable swimming experience. Although be careful not to bless yourself among the ruins or on the uneven pool ground.

The access to the pool is possible by paying an entrance fee. You can still admire the submerged ruins from free from the outside. The entry fee will give you access to restrooms and lockers where you can leave your belongings while bathing.

Note: if you want to take your electronic devices inside the pool for a photo souvenir, forget about it! The staff won’t let you, the structure has a photographer that sells photos instead.

Tips for visiting

If you are visiting Hierapolis and the travertine pools in the same day make sure to dress comfortably. Hierapolis is a very large archaeological site and you will be walking, a lot! For this reason consider bringing a swimsuit and a towel (to enjoy the thermal waters), some water, and sunscreen.

4. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Even though less impressive than Cappadocia’s valleys, the bird view of the travertine terraces is still beautiful. Of course if you have the budget for only one ride, I’d go for Cappadocia.

And yet experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Pamukkale and the surroundings mountains from a hot air balloon is worthwhile. Float above the terraces and witness the sunrise for a truly magical experience.

And if you don’t know which experience you should book, check out our comparative table:

Company NameDurationPrice
Tourmania60 min.210€
Payless Turizm60 min.140€
Unique Ephesus Tour35 min.166€
Tourmania15-30 min.100€

Note: Some companies says they have breakfast included, but following 2020, they removed it to respect hygiene standards. If this is important to you, ask if they still offer it when reserving.

5. Enjoy the Thermal Waters of Karahayit

Venture beyond Pamukkale to Karahayit, a village known for its vibrant red thermal waters. Just like Pamukkale there are many springs around this small village and also many hotels have their own private red springs.

Marvel at the striking color and enjoy a relaxing dip in the mineral-rich hot springs. The red color is due to the high mineral content present in the springs, particularly iron oxide and other minerals.

Aside from the thermal pools, many resorts in Karahayit provide additional amenities to enhance your visit. You can indulge in soothing spa treatments such as mud baths, facials, and massages, all utilizing the natural minerals found in the thermal waters.

Karahayit is also one of the best places to stay in when visiting Pamukkale and Hierapolis. There are many excellent resorts and thermal hotels.

Our hotel pick? Pam Thermal Hotel and Clinic.

Their thermal pools are huge, they also have a normal one. And their buffet is extraordinary! I still have water in my mouth thinking of their excellent dessert buffet.

6. Explore the Kaklik Cave

Discover the fascinating Kaklik Cave, also known as the “Underground Pamukkale.” This natural wonder features unique formations of travertine and stalactites, making it an off-the-beaten-path gem.

Kaklik Cave is a labyrinth of stunning travertine terraces, cascading pools, and flowing streams. The sunlight filtering through the openings in the cave ceiling adds a magical touch, illuminating the formations and creating a captivating play of light and shadow.

As you enter Kaklik Cave, you’ll find a labyrinth of stunning travertine terraces, cascading pools, and flowing streams. The travertine formations resemble frozen waterfalls, with their intricate patterns and textures.

7. Visit Laodicea

Laodicea was an important city in ancient times and is known for its well-preserved ruins. As you explore the site, you’ll come across ancient structures such as the theater, the odeon, and several temples. These ruins provide a glimpse into the architectural achievements and urban planning of the ancient city.

The theater of Laodicea is one of the main highlights of the site. With a seating capacity of around 15,000 spectators, it was a significant venue for theatrical performances and public gatherings.

Laodicea covers a significant area, and exploring the site involves walking through the ruins. Be prepared for uneven surfaces and wear comfortable footwear suitable for walking on archaeological terrain.

As you explore Laodicea, you will enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, particularly Pamukkale. The elevated position of the ancient city allows for picturesque vistas of the Turkish countryside and mountains.

8. Pamper Yourself in Thermal Spas

Similarly to the Dead Sea, many tourists come to Pamukkale to indulge in the spa treatments at one of the thermal spas in Pamukkale. Or one of the many hotels that have thermal spas.

Known since ancient times for their beneficial effect, you have the choice between the thermal waters of Pamukkale (notably Cleopatra’s pool) and the red waters of Karahayit.

If you decide to stay in Pamukkale: Pamukkale Melrose Viewpoint Suites is the ideal accommodation for you, being only 5 minutes by walk from the travertine terraces you can take your time to enjoy the benefits of the thermal waters in the large pools or in Hierapolis.

For more thorough treatments check out Karahayit instead. I have already mentioned the amazing Pam Thermal Hotel and Clinic, but how not to mention the beautiful Herakles Thermal Hotel? Both accommodations have thermal pools with mud and you can also book complete spa treatments.

So take some time off, relax in the warm mineral-rich waters, enjoy a soothing massage, and rejuvenate your mind and body!

9. Sample Local Cuisine

Taste the delicious local cuisine of Pamukkale. Try traditional Turkish dishes like kebabs, pide (Turkish pizza), and gözleme (stuffed flatbread). My personal favorite were dishes with lamb. I’m usually not a fan of lamb but the way they season it makes its flavor really stand out.

As costume in Istanbul when shopping or wandering in the streets, you will be often offered Turkish tea. This delicious blend of black tea is a must try! You can even take the delicious Turkish delights to go with it.

Last but not least, you have to taste the flying ice cream! Dondurma, as it’s called in English, reminds mastic because of its consistence. One of the funniest things to witness is when vendors prepare it: they take the ice cream with a long stick and start to rotate it above their heads. The taste is very good also, less sweet than Italian ice cream but still excellent!

Practical info to plan your trip to Pamukkale

When is the best time to visit Pamukkale?

From April-May to September-October. The temperatures are mild and you will be able to dip inside the regular pools without freezing.

Getting to Pamukkale

Pamukkale is situated far away from the coast in the South West of Turkey. The site is 1 hour flight from Istanbul and about 6 hours by car. Based on our experience the best way to explore this rural region is on a road trip from Cappadocia.

Coming from the fairy lands of Cappadocia to Pamukkale is an exciting journey. The landscapes are incredible, and there are so many places to visit along, like the most ancient village in the world, Çatalhöyük.

If you are coming from the air, check out flights to Denizli Çardak Airport. Once there you can rent a car to move around the area.

Day trips to Pamukkale

Don’t want to think about the logistic? This private tour from Istanbul, including the flight will take care of everything. Altough if you have more time I highly recommend spending at least two days in Pamukkale.

Planning to match Pamukkale with some time on the beautiful Aegean coast? From Kusadasi or Selcuk you have this one day guided tour. Be aware though, the road is long (about 3 hours).

One last word about the best things to do in Pamukkale

Remember to check the availability and opening hours of the attractions you are going to visit in advance, as some may vary depending on the season or ongoing renovations.

Whether you choose to soak in the warm thermal waters, take a hot air balloon ride for panoramic views, or indulge in the local cuisine, you are sure to spend an incredible time in Pamukkale. So, pack your bags, put on your walking shoes, and embark on a journey to the Cotton Castle!

Things to know when booking your stay in Wadi Rum

Do they serve alcohol in Wadi Rum?

No, inside the Wadi Rum reserve, you won’t find a drop of alcohol. Not in the camps and not even in the tourist center. If you want to bring some drinks consider buying them in Amman, Petra, or Aqaba.

WiFi in the camps

Many camps claim to have it. But when it comes to usability, based on experiences (not only mine) from different camps, it will be available only in some restricted areas. And it probably won’t work very well.

My point is, enjoy this precious time to unplug from the internet/socials and connect with your inner self and your travel companions. If you are afraid of boredom bring a good old book.

Do the camps offer extra activities? (4WD ride, camel ride)

When you are inside the camps you can often book extra activities like the 4WD tours or camel rides. Although at the camps (especially the luxurious ones), they often cost more than if you book directly at the visitors center. My advice is to contact the camp you are staying in before your trip and ask about the prices for their extra activities.

Most camps don’t have their own tours but they support the Bedouin tours, if you book directly with the Bedouin you will save on their commission, which is not free. You can also contact the visitors center before your arrival (we didn’t get an answer, but maybe you will be luckier than us!).

One word about luxury in the desert

Remember where you are. The desert is a place hostile to life with very particular conditions. The temperatures range, the sun, and the sand makes it difficult to keep everything in optimal condition. And you are kilometers away from other cities.

So don’t be surprised if everything isn’t a top-notch luxury, try to be understanding. And if you are looking to splurge on the best hotels in Jordan, check out our post about the most luxurious hotels in Aqaba.

Which will you choose: Martian Dome or traditional Bedouin tents?

The Best Cappadocia Tours

As a good comparative table is worth more than 1000 words, here is a short recap of the best Cappadocia Tours divided in experiences/activities and cultural tours, which last about a day. For a more in dept analysis keep reading.

Both Viator and GetYourGuide have the same tours. But GetYourGuide is slightly less expensive, for this reason those are the links I’ve included.

🎈Bucket list experience: Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tour

This is the most expensive and yet must-buy item of this list! Floating in the sky while admiring the incredible Goreme valley was the one thing I know I wanted to do while planning my trip. And even though it’s a pricey experience, I’m pretty sure you will find it was worth it. Tours take place at dawn, so you can witness the stunning colors of the sunrise over the fairy chimneys.

Choosing the right company is an art (there are so many things to take into account), that’s why I wrote a very detailed guide on how to pick the best company. However if you want the fast answer, there are two options that are a 100% worth the money: budget-friendly Cappadocia Discovery Balloons. While for a luxurious treat you should go with Royal Balloon – King flight.

Wanna see how a Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride looks like? I know I’m not the best filmmaker but the video down below will give you an idea of what it’s like.

🛣️Sunset ATV tour in Red, Rose, and Love Valley

A sunset ATV tour through the Red, Rose, and Love Valleys of Cappadocia is a thrilling way to explore the region’s natural wonders while taking in the stunning sunset views. The tour typically starts in the late afternoon and takes visitors on a guided ride through the rocky terrain and valleys of Cappadocia, passing by unique rock formations and picturesque landscapes.

As the sun begins to set, the valleys come alive with a warm glow, creating a breathtaking backdrop for the tour. The tour typically ends with a stop at a scenic viewpoint where visitors can watch the sunset while sipping on traditional Turkish tea or coffee.

The only drawback? ATV tours are in large groups (up to 20 people) meaning you may feel a bit neglected and “lost in the crowd”.

Check out prices and book the Sunset ATV tour.

Cappadocia, Turkey, Rose Valley

🐪Camel Safari in Red and Rose Valley

Camel riding is another unique way to experience the stunning landscapes of Cappadocia. Comparing to horses, camels are slightly less comfortable. The ride is a relaxing and peaceful way to explore the area, allowing visitors to take in the natural beauty of the region while enjoying the gentle sway of the camels.

The guides are also very kind and they will take plenty of photos and videos for you, in additions to explaining you abit more about the sites you are visiting.

Check out prices and book the Camel Safari in Red and Rose Valley.

🐎Sunset Horse Riding Tour

The horse riding tour will take you on a guided ride through the valleys and rock formations of the Rose Valley. The best part of this experience is that it’s open also to beginners and kids who are at least 6 years old. The guides will follow you and make sure you are comfortable.

The horse ride includes a visit to the rock-cut Church of the Cross, inside the Red Valley. The ride takes place at sunset letting you admire the beautiful landscapes in soft pastel colors.

Check out prices and book the Sunset Horse Riding Tour.

💆‍♀️Traditional Turkish Bath Experience

A traditional Turkish bath, or hamam, is one of the most relaxing experiences to try in Cappadocia. This centuries-old practice involves a deep cleansing of the body in a heated marble room, where visitors are exfoliated and massaged with traditional soap and a loofah.

The Turkish bath experience is known for its therapeutic benefits, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation of the mind and body. After the bath, you can relax in the serene surroundings of the hamam and sip on traditional Turkish tea while taking in the ambiance of this ancient tradition.

Pro tip: Bring an underwear change as the one you’ll be wearing may get oily or sweaty.

🔴Red Tour – the Best of Cappadocia cultural heritage in a day

The Red Tour focuses on the region’s historical and cultural highlights. This type of tour is a great way to learn about the rich history and heritage of Cappadocia while exploring its most notable landmarks and attractions. Of course, if you want to save some money you can do this tours by yourself, knowing that for example in Goreme Open Air Museum, this website has a free mini guide.

One of the most interesting stops of the Red Tours is Cavusin. This village is famous for its cave dwellings and rock-cut churches, which provide a glimpse into the daily lives as it once was, and people still live here.

The village, that climbs on a large rock formation also boasts stunning views of the surrounding valleys and fairy chimneys, making it a great spot for photography enthusiasts. A guided tour of Cavusin will let you learn more about the traditions and costumes of people who lived there in antiquity and the changes following the Romans arrival.

Other iconic stops on the Red Tour may include the Uchisar Castle, the Pigeon Valley, and the Love Valley, each offering unique perspectives on Cappadocia’s stunning landscape. Check out prices and book the Red Tours here:

🔵Blue Tour – Hiking in the iconic Red and Rose Valley, the Underground City, Ortahisar Castle

The Blue Tour is another popular tour option in Cappadocia that takes visitors on a journey through the region’s natural wonders. Hiking among the beautiful Rose and Red Valley, or visiting the Ortahisar Castle, a rock formation that was entirely carved in the past creating a city.

Visitors can also expect to see the unique rock formations of the Pigeon Valley and Cavusin. The Blue Tour is a great way to explore the breathtaking landscape of Cappadocia and appreciate the incredible natural beauty that makes this region so unique.

Check out prices and book the Blue Tour here: Blue Tour Red and Rose Valley, Underground City, Ortahisar Castle.

🟢Green Tour – Underground City, Selime Monastery, Uchisar Castle.

The Green Tour is very interesting to discover the hidden treasures in Cappadocia’s South. And notably one of the most incredible things to see in Cappadocia, the Underground City of Derinkuyu. In the antiquity underground cities in Cappadocia could host up to 20.000 inhabitants, who wouldn’t see sunlight sometimes for months. If you are not claustrophobic this is indeed a must-do in your Cappadocia itinerary.

Situated a few kilometers away from Derinkuyu, Guzelyurt is home to an incredible archaeological site: Selime Monastery. The monastery is a remarkable historic site located in the Ihlara Valley of Cappadocia. This stunning complex features a series of rock-cut churches, monasteries, and dwellings, all carved into the towering cliffs that surround the valley. The monastery dates back to the 8th century and was once an important center of learning and worship.

Last stop of the Green Tour is Uchisar Castle. Sitting on top of a towering rock formation that once served as a defensive stronghold, you can now climb to the top of the castle for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Including the stunning fairy chimneys that dot the region.

Uchisar also boasts a charming town center with traditional Turkish architecture, quaint cafes, and local shops selling handmade crafts and souvenirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the experiences/activities worth the prices?

There are no doubts that the hot air balloon ride among the fairy chimneys is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But if the budget is on your side, I’d also consider booking one of the sunset tours between the ATV, camel or horse.

The Turkish Bath experience is also an unique experience you could consider if you are spending 3 or more days in the region. If you are staying less time, instead you should spend your time exploring the incredible surroundings.

Are Cappadocia cultural tours worth the money?

It depends on your budget. But yes, cultural tours in Cappadocia are worth the money. Cappadocia is a region steeped in history and culture, with a wealth of ancient sites and landmarks to explore.

A cultural tour allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s rich heritage, from the stunning rock-cut churches and monasteries to the traditional Turkish villages and local handicrafts. The tours are led by knowledgeable (and super friendly) guides who can provide valuable insights and historical context, bringing the region’s fascinating history to life.

And you have many choice depending on which are your interests. Whether it’s exploring the ancient underground cities, visiting traditional Turkish pottery workshops, or learning about the region’s famous cuisine.

What’s the difference between the Red, Blue and Green Tours in Cappadocia?

The Red, Blue, and Green Tours in Cappadocia are different tour packages that offer visitors the opportunity to explore different parts of the region. Here is a brief overview of each tour and what sets them apart:

  • The Red Tour is the most popular tour package in Cappadocia, and it covers some of the region’s most iconic landmarks, with a particular emphasis on the stunning rock-cut churches and monasteries.
  • The Blue Tour is a lesser-known tour package that takes visitors off the beaten path to explore some of the region’s hidden gems. From Ortahisar Castle to the amazing underground cities, without forgetting the stunning viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • The Green Tour offers a different perspective on Cappadocia, focusing on the natural beauty of the region. This tour will take you to the stunning Ihlara Valley, where you can explore the region’s dramatic canyons and stunning rock formations. Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tours, Which is the best company?

Congratulations! You are about to realize one of your bucket list dreams and fly on a hot air balloon in Cappadocia fairy tale land. But which is the best company to book your flight? How can you establish your budget? Don’t worry! I’ve been in the exactly same position. And since there is some $$$ involved with this activity I went thoroughly through all the options. I’ve selected the most important things you should consider when booking, and the pros and cons of each option. So without no further ado let’s find you the perfect ride!

Disclosure: anitabeyondthesea.com is reader-supported. When you make a reservation through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission, at no extra cost for you. That will help me keep the blog up and running. Thank you!

Table of Contents

Don’t have the time for the whole post? Pick our choices!

I highly recommend going through the guide as I explain what you should look for when booking and what to expect. But if you don’t have enough time, here are our top picks for a budget-friendly experience or a luxury ride.

Budget-friendly: Cappadocia Discovery Balloons have among the best prices and offer a very good service. They have experienced pilots almost all are English speakers.

Luxury ride: Royal Balloon – King flight. It’s as they say, Royal Balloons is one of the best companies that fly in Cappadocia. If you are willing to spend a little more, that would be my go-to option. Their King flight is an 8-places max basket that let you admire unobstructed views for 75 minutes. You also have an open buffet instead of the basic breakfast.

Hot air balloons flying in Cappadocia Turkey

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Tours, the different companies

The following table resumes the main aspects you should be aware of before booking your flight. Know that even if we work to keep this data up to date and accurate, there still may be some discrepancies with your final experience. That’s why before booking your activity you shouldn’t hesitate to contact the company and ask them every question that may be relevant to you.

Be aware that flights may be canceled at any moment if Civil Aviation won’t give the authorization because of the weather conditions. In case that happens the company will propose another slot the following day/days depending on their availability. If you can’t delay your ride you will be automatically refunded. You can always ask for confirmation when you book your flight but that’s the norm.

The comparison table is sorted by the basket capacity.

When is the best time to book your Cappadocia hot air balloon tour?

Now! People come from all around the world to visit the incredible Cappadocia region with its natural beauty. Sometimes, especially during the high season, flights get completed months before. Based also on my experience, where I ended up flying in the second slot instead of the first, I would recommend booking the activity just after you make your hotel reservation.

Hot air balloon ride duration

The duration is indicative, most companies write 60 minutes minimum but unfortunately, that also depends on the weather conditions. It may be more around 45 minutes or 70 minutes. If for any reason your tour lasts too short, you can try to negotiate for a refund or free activity compensation.

Avanos as seen from a hot air balloon

Number of passengers

Each basket has a different capacity but even with fewer people you will not be free to move around. The baskets are divided into smaller sections, each one of them containing 4 or 5 people max.

Of course the smaller the basket the better for the views but don’t stress over the basket size too much. Between 20 and 28 capacity baskets, there isn’t a huge difference. The hot air balloons turn multiple times letting you admire every side of the landscape.

Otherwise, you can book a VIP experience, a private flight where you have the basket for you and your group.

Take off location

The take-off location is probably the most important thing you should look out for when booking your hot air balloon ride. Most companies take off nearby Goreme and fly over the valleys and the fairy chimneys.

In the list, two companies take-off from two different points. Of course, the prices are more interesting, but be aware that you won’t see the same things as the companies that fly from Goreme. My two cents? I really recommend to spend the extra cash and take off from Goreme valley, trust me you won’t regret it!

  • Soganli Valley is 45 minutes away from Goreme. The landscape is still nice but less spectacular. You will be flying with 2-6 more balloons.
  • Çat Valley is a long valley of 7 km with small conic fairy chimneys that are very cute to see. Unlike Soganli you may see the hot air balloons flying over Goreme in the distance. But you will not see the Love Valley, Rose Valley, Goreme, etc… Take this into account so that you will not be disappointed.
hot air balloons taking off in Goreme valley Cappadocia

Breakfast

Unlike many other hot air balloon rides around the world, breakfast is served before flying. Unless you will choose an expensive option the breakfast is very light and you shouldn’t be afraid of airsickness.

Most companies offer tea, coffee, juice, and biscuits. A few give also fruits to their guests. Either way don’t expect a large buffet unless you book deluxe experiences, like the flights from Royal Balloons.

Low Season vs High Season

Due to the risk of report and cancellation in Winter months, there is a huge gap between low season and high season prices. Usually, low season runs from November to March, while high season is from April to October.

Temperatures are also better in general to hike and explore. For these reasons from mid-spring to mid-autumn your experience will be more enjoyable. But if you want to take your chance and fly in Winter, Cappadocia’s valleys covered in snow are absolutely magical!

One more thing to be aware of: prices change from LS to HS in a day. The 31 March you may pay half or 2/3 of the price if you fly on 1st April. And no, that’s not an April’s Fool in case you are wondering!

hot air balloon flying over Cappadocia, Turkey

What’s included with ALL flights?

No matter which company you book for your Cappadocia hot air balloon ride, the following options are always included:

Hotel pickup and drop-off

All the companies have shuttles taking you from your hotel to the take-off site without you having to bother to find your destination. But there is one thing you should bother: double-check with your driver that you are on the right bus. I know this may sound weird, but it’s not that unusual for people to jump on the wrong shuttle.

To avoid this you may simply check with your tour supplier if they have branded shuttles, many do. In case they don’t, just make sure about the pickup time and ask the driver.

If you are not based in Goreme’s region a supplement must apply. As soon as you got your hotel booked make sure to send it to the company you are flying with so that they can confirm it’s included.

Champagne toast after landing

How to celebrate a lifetime experience? With champagne! Once you are safely on the ground and still happy about the experience it’s time to pop the champagne and thank the crew for the amazing experience. If you don’t drink alcohol you have fresh juices or non-alcoholic options.

Flight certificate

The flight certificate is a very nice souvenir to remember your experience. Printed on an A4 piece of paper, make sure to store it somewhere safe, ideally on the bottom of your suitcase without making corners. Royal Balloon awards his customers with a medal.

Some extra questions to ask your flight company

Pilots experience

Don’t ask generic questions like “is your pilot skilled?”, as of course they will answer yes. Because I mean, what’s the point otherwise? Instead ask how many years they have been flying and how many pilots they have. In that case, when they answer, you may also ask if it’s possible to book their most experienced pilot’s ride.

If you are a curious passenger also remember to ask if you can fly with an English-speaking pilot. Not all pilots have English notions, so if that’s important to you don’t forget to ask.

Altitude changes

Normally if you book an experienced/skilled pilot he will make many altitude variations and he will also get very low among the fairy chimneys. Most companies fly low in the middle of the Love Valley. But that’s only if their pilot is confident and experienced enough.

Also, an inexperienced pilot will not “turn” the balloon often and some people may complain about their sights as they may have a less interesting view. This is true especially for balloons that have a 20 passengers or more capacity.

Take off slot

A few people know this before flying, but there are two different slots for the balloons. To avoid accidents, Civil Aviation limits the number of flying balloons to 100, yes there are so many each morning!

The first slot is before sunrise, and you will get to see the sun picking from behind the large rock formation that shadows Goreme. Contrary to the first slot when you will take off with the second slot the sun will be already enlightening the sky.

The experience is just as amazing, however, you can try to ask your company to save a spot for you in the slot you prefer. If you ask them early, they should be able to arrange you with the time you prefer.

NOTE: Some companies let you choose the time slot when booking the flight. Sunrise is the first slot while Daylight is the second slot.

Hot air balloon inflating process

Even if seeing the hot air balloon inflating process was a must for me (you also get to take some amazing photos!), it has its pros and cons. Among the cons, you will be freezing for longer, as the temperatures outside are really cold, even in Summer! And to some people, the process may seem long. Nevertheless, I personally found it was an interesting moment to witness, and as a passionate photographer, I also enjoyed taking pictures.

With this in mind, not all companies bring their passengers at the beginning of the process, some prefer to let their passengers wait while having a short breakfast, and bring them once the balloon is almost ready. One more thing to ask your provider.

Who cannot ride a hot air balloon in Cappadocia?

Unfortunately, Cappadocia hot air balloons are not accessible to everyone yet. Due to their climb-in climb-out system people in wheelchairs are not able yet to participate in the rides. I’m really hoping that will change soon as accessible hot air balloons are already available in multiple tourist sites.

As for children, they can’t ride if they are under 7 years old. But above all, you should consider their height, under 1,40 meters they will not be able to see over the basket’s edges.

Last on our list, pregnant women are discouraged/prohibited from flying at any stage of their pregnancy because of the landings. In almost all cases the landing will not be dangerous, as the pilots are experienced, but you won’t want to take risks.

In conclusion, is it worth booking a Cappadocia hot air balloon flight?

Yes, a 100%! Of course, it’s expensive but it’s a once in a lifetime experience that I will personally cherish forever. The complete Travel Guide to Wadi Rum desert

You may think you have landed on Mars when first stepping into the Wadi Rum desert. The red sea of sand, iceberg-crossed by black mountains of granite rocks, reminds the red planet as seen in many thematic movies. Since 1962, when the Lawrence of Arabia movie came out, tourism became more popular in this remote region of Jordan. Nowadays this fascinating area attracts almost the same number of visitors as neighbor Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the world.
